Pain control is essential to optimize patient comfort, assist with early postoperative physical therapy, avoid complications associated with prolonged bed rest, and reduce hospital inpatient durations and costs. In addition to the ethical responsibility of minimizing suffering, the Joint Commission has mandated that patients' self-reported pain score must be documented as a "fifth vital sign."
