Rooted in statute within the federal Occupational Safety and Health Act, the law grants the secretary of labor - via OSHA - sweeping powers to push companies to eliminate workplace hazards. Through its field inspection reference manual - along with agency directives, interpretations and guidance from case law - OSHA has developed specific protocols for conducting inspections.
