摘要

GETTING A COMPREHENSIVE ECONOMIC Trade Agreement (CETA) with the European Union was "quite a coup" for Canada, but the United States is right behind, and the benefit will go to the first into the market, says Trade Consultant Kathleen Sullivan.Sullivan warned pork producers at the London Swine Conference that "everyone is chasing the same markets. In the countries where demand (for pork) is growing, we have stiff competition" from theU.S., E.U., Brazil, Mexico and Chile.Another challenge is that "trade deals take a long time to negotiate." CETA took five years - "and it was quick".The obvious trade strategy is "where you've got existing markets, you want to lock them in."The trade priorities for pork are the European Union, South Korea and Japan.
