Here are some tips for making your staff meetings productive for owners, management and staff.JOB SATISFACTION, communication, money and benefits are the top factors influencing the staying power of farm employees, says Brad Drechsler, owner of Agrinet Management Training and Employment in Red Deer, Alberta. Drechsler's most successful hog farming clients have maintained many of their key barn staff for over 10 years. Empowering the people that work for you and giving them respect should be key priorities for farm managers, says Drechsler. So should communication. "Keep them in the loop," he says. "Make staff aware of what is going on with the business side of the operation." That way, if wages need to be reduced in tough times, there is an understanding of the reasons why. "Involve people in the process," says Drechsler. This needn't be complicated, he adds. Drechsler recalls a long-term employee on one successful farm operation saying that he'll never forget the time the boss bought lunch and brought it in for everyone. This is one example of putting people first; a good first step toward motivating staff members.
