Harvesting light: Photocells can help control lighting and fans in order to provide more energy efficiency

A LIGHTING manufacturer, GVA Lighting, of Mississauga, recently teamed up with a Guelph-based engineering consulting firm, Agviro Inc., to analyze the potential savings of some new energy efficient lighting technology. The results are positive. Whilethe trials were done on a turkey farm, Ron MacDonald, president and owner of Agviro, says hog farmers with dual ventilated barns would do well to adopt the same technology. The study compared the electricity use, light levels and effects on bird performance of a dim' mable four-foot tube fluorescent light system on dimmer control with a similar system controlled by the relatively new photocell technology.
