Removal of granulosa theca cell tumor in a standing mare through flank surgery.

A 5y-old400kg Arabian mare with a 3-month history of gradual changes in behavior characterized asstallion-like and aggressiveness towards people and other horses in late estrus was presentedfor examination. Based on aggressive male-like behavior, transrectal palpation, ultrasonographyand testosterone levels of 2/6 mmol L -1 , a diagnosis of granulosa theca cell tumor (GTCT) wasmade. Surgical removal of the affected ovary was chosen as the treatment of choice. Standingflank ovariectomy was performed under a sedative analgesic combination of xylazine-morphineand local anesthesia. A 20-cm longitudinal skin incision was made in the left paralumbar fossaand an ovarian tumor was removed after 3 transfixation ligatures of the ovarian pedicle.Histopathologic examination confirmed granulosa theca cell tumor and the horse returned tonormal estrus cycle, behavior and pregnancy.
