One hundred and ten double haploid (DH) rice lines were derived from a cross between submergence tolerant genotype IR49830-7-1-2-2 and CT6241-17-1-5-1, a non-tolerant genotype which is highly polymorphic and responsive to anther culture. The DH lines were evaluated for two years (1995 and 1996) under field conditions for elongation, survival, yield and a number of yield-related traits. Analysis of data revealed significant genotypic variation for all traits, including submergence tolerance. Broad-sense heritability ranged from 62 to 97%. Moderate elongation and high survival percentage are considered important for rainfed lowlands. Five DH lines showed consistently less elongation and higher survival percentage than the best standard, FR13A, the survival percentage being more than 95%. There were half a dozen more lines which had survival percentages greater than 85%.
