Response of rice (Oriza sativa L.) varieties to nitrogen application time under direct-seeded puddled condition

A field experiment was conducted during the wet season of 1997 and 1998 with three varieties of rice (Nidhi, Ajaya and Shalivahana) and seven N schedules with different split applications under puddle seeded condition. Results revealed that differences in grain yield among varieties and N schedules. Variety Ajaya recorded maximum grain yield (6.32 t ha~(-1)) and benefit : cost ratio (2.16). Among nitrogen schedules, the highest grain yield of 6.34 t ha~(-1) was recorded with application of 1/3 N eachat 21, 42 and 56 days after sowing with B:C ratio of 1.47 as compared to other schedules. An application of 1/3 N each at basal, tillering and panicle initiation recorded the lowest B:C ratio (0.98).
