摘要

Great Spotted Woodpeckers Dendrocopos major are omnivorous and feed on arthropods, tree seeds and fleshy fruits (Cramp 1998; Matsuoka 1977). Their foraging habits vary in different habitats. The Great Spotted Woodpecker (GSW) is widely distributed, from Arctic taiga through boreal forest to temperate forest zones, wherever there are trees of any sort with sufficient growth to accommodate nest holes. GSW is a common species also in fragmented forests in both urban and agricultural areas in Hokkaido, an area of Japan marked by a boreal climate (Anada & Fujimaki 1984; Itou & Fujimaki 1990).
