Selection parameters in segregating populations of rice, generated by the pedigree method from cross IR 36 X MW 10 were studied under irrigated and upland conditions. Genotypes tested in upland conditions showed more genetic variability with moderate heritability and adequate genetic advance as a percentage of mean. Stress environment differentiated rice strains better than normal environment. Grain yield had a significant positive association with plant height, tillers plant-1, panicle weight, straw weight and biological yield in both the environments, whereas panicle length and grains panicle-1 were positively correlated with grain yield only in upland conditions. Path analysis showed that biological yield, under irrigated conditions and panicleweight in upland conditions are the major attributes of grain yield. The ideal plant type for irrigated conditions has a high biological yield with high panicle weight and straw weight along with more tillers plant-1 and grains panicle-1. However, an ideal plant type for upland conditions should have high panicle weight, biological yield and straw weight coupled with more tillers plant1, large panicle length and a large number of grains panicle-1.
