An investigation with the F_2 and F_3 generations derived from three inter-varietal tall X dwarf crosses, was undertaken to find out character association among yield and yield components, their direct and indirect effects on grain yield. Number of productive tillers, harvest index and dry matter production had significant and positive relationship with single plant yield in both F_2 and F_3 generations. Among yield components, number of grains panicle~(-1) had significant correlation with panicle length, harvest index and dry matter production. Dry matter production and harvest index exhibited profound positive direct effect on grain yield in both the generations as evidenced from the path coefficient analysis. The yield components, viz, number of productive tillers, panicle length, grains panicle~(-1), 100-grain weight and harvest index could influence the yield through their considerable positive indirect effect via dry matter production.
