Healthy food messages need more clout

Last month we held the first Horticultural Forum in Christchurch.The new format bought together not only our 22 product groups but also representation from the district associations. It was great to have you attend. The next forum meeting will be held in Wellington on December 4.August's forum was held alongside the final of the 2014Young Grower of the Year competition.While we were tucked up inside on a wintery day the contestants were competing at various tasks. Some, such as the horti-sports, were very entertaining while other tasks required considerable knowledge and skill. Later in the day contestants were required to give a short speech and answer impromptu questions from the crowd.The grand finale was held at the evening dinner function.The four finalists gave high quality, engaging and entertaining speeches. All were professional and I'm sure the judges found it difficult to separate out the winner.The 250-strong audience had an excellent evening. The Canterbury growers, sponsors and organisers came together to showcase the event. Well done to Graham Martin (local organiser) and Hort NZ's Michelle de Jong (national organiser); it was a very well run event.
