Impatiens necrotic spot virus found in oncidium: reporting a new ailment for orchids.

In 2001, the California Department of Food and Agriculture Virology Laboratory confirmed that Impatiens necrotic spot virus (INSV) had infected Oncidium varicosum. Infected oncidium showed symptoms typical of a virus disease, with leaves having various types of yellow mottling or streaks, irregularly shaped necrotic (brown to black) spots, and yellow to necrotic concentric ringspots. The virus belongs to the Tospovirus group which includes the tomato spotted wilt virus. Methods for reducing the risk of the disease include using uninfected plant material, removing weeds which act as hosts of the insect vector (Thrips sp) or using insecticides to prevent thrips from transmitting the pathogen.
