Production to plate + transport; the equation needed to establish environmental effects of world food trade. With recent UK comment drawing attention to "food miles" and New Zealand's horticulture exports it is evident many complex factors that should enter into the debate are being overlooked. Olive oil and kiwifruit exports have been targeted for unfair criticism mainly on grounds that they have been sent to England by eco-unfriendly air transport when, in fact, they went by ship.
