A Gift of Reichenbachias: The AOS Library Secures Rare Volumes of This Classic Work

IN FEBRUARY 2005, DR. ARTHUR W. Burke Jr., of Mechanicsville, Virginia, generously donated a historically significant complete four-volume set of Reichenbachia to the AOS. These striking resources, dated from the mid-to late-1800s, have already foundan honored place in the AOS's permanent library archives, and they will doubtless prove to be of immeasurable value to future generations of visiting orchidists and orchid historians. The set is complete, with all 192 color lithographs and text for eachin four languages. The volumes are beautifully leather bound and the interior in each is in excellent condition. An added historical value for the AOS is that the set was once the property of John Lager, a pioneer orchid nurseryman in Summit, New Jersey, and one of the founders of the AOS. Further, Burke made the magnanimous donation in memory of the late Merritt Huntington, past president and two-time Gold Medal of Achievement honoree by the AOS.
