IT ALL STARTED WHEN I WAS 14, while I was captivated by palms. The summer before my freshman year of high school was filled with trips to my small neighborhood library to pick up books about palms. One day, curiosity persuaded me to take another volume off the shelf. That book was Understanding Orchids by William Cullina. I flipped through the pages and my eyebrows rose in awe at the sight of flowers the likes of which I had never seen. That summer my interest in palms gradually moved to a dedication to orchids.
