Citrus Tristeza virus in citrus in New Zealand 2: Preimunisation of citrus against severe strains of CTV

Throughout the world there are many debilitating virus diseases that can cause partial or total loss of the crop. Virus diseases of citrus can affect the vigour and life of the plants and consequently yield and quality of fruit produced. Fortunately,New Zealand citrus is only affected by a relatively few virus diseases and the virus causing most concern is Citrus Tristeza virus which is transmitted both vegetatively and by aphid vectors. Citrus Tristeza virus (CTV) is a complex of two forms with many strains, the decline strains cause decline and death of the rootstock, while stem pitting strains affect the scion irrespective of the rootstock. The use of trifoliate orange and hybrids as rootstocks in New Zealand has prevented any loss due to rootstock infection of the decline strains.
