THE ATLANTA BOTANICAL GARDEN is home to one of the largest and most diverse collections of orchid species in the United States. As an institution, one of the garden's goals is the long-term maintenance of this diversity. But because the materials andmethods available to us are derived from commercial industry, where the goal is rapid production of monoculture rather than diversity and long-term maintenance, we have to be selective about which methods we borrow. Finding ways to adapt commercial production methods to our needs is one of our biggest challenges.
