Conservatories are architectural statements. They should be, since they are typically sited in high-end real estate areas and are the focal point of parks and botanical gardens. They are intended to draw attention and lure visitors, acting as tropical oases in urban areas. The fact that they are first and foremost architectural endeavors, and greenhouses only after the fact, frequently make them very challenging for horticulturists to operate.
