The phenomenal success of New Zealand's largest independent wine company, Villa Maria Estate, has its roots in its founder's abiding love affair with wine and his independent and pioneering spirit. Passion and determination are the essential ingredients for entrepreneurial success and Sir George Fistonich, the company's founder, managing director and owner, displays these qualities in bucket loads. Since founding the company 49 years ago, Fistonich has grown it from a 'cottage' winery near his familyhome, to New Zealand's third biggest wine company and a thriving export business. And along the way Villa Maria has won more medals, trophies and awards than any other New Zealand wine company and exports about 50 per cent of its wines to around 40 countries.
