Field and temperature dependences of the Cotton–Mouton effect in the erbium glass Er(PO3)3 are studied. The magnetic linear birefringence (MLD) was measured at a laser wavelength of 0.63 μm in a magnetic field up to 40 kOe in the temperature range from 4.2 to 295 K. It is shown that behavior of the MLD in the Er(PO3)3 glass can be interpreted within the framework of a microscopic theory according to which the even magne-tooptic effects result from the quadrupole moment of the rare-earth ion induced by the external magnetic field.
