As mentioned in the previous article, the various tasks necessary to edge a lens, or pair of lenses, consist of a number of basic things, including receipt of lens details, pick out from stock or order from surfacing lab, produce shape former, or trace shape of frame, or use details sent with order (pre-scanned shape), check that correct type of lens has been picked/surfaced and that no major faults are apparent, and check powers and axes where applicable. In addition: mark optical centres and axes where applicable, 'lay-off' for glazing, i.e., rotate each lens to correct axis and then decentre the required amount (taking into account, where applicable, the position of a bifocal/trifocal segment or progressive position) - then mark the lens with a horizontal and vertical 'cutting line', apply holder to lens - using suction cup or adhesive pad - to the markings from previous task, enter required details into auto-edger (where applicable), insert former into autoedger (where applicable), insert first lens into auto-edger, and start machine and edge lens.
