During a March 2006 interview, Canada's "Godfather" of coal-bed methane production Ken Sinclair and his colleague Phil Geiger put a brave face on their company's difficulties. Long before the Montney discovery brought indu$try's big boys flocking to northeast British Columbia, Sinclair and Geiger, vice-president and chief executive officer, respectively of Canadian Spirit Resources Inc., believed that CBM would catch fire in the industry. They persuaded a handful of investors to back them, bought up some land, and drilled a dozen test wells. They knew they were sitting on a prize-up to 1.8 trillion cubic feet of gas on their 60 sections. "Just drive up to our wellgite and take a look at out flare," urged Sinclair with characteristic ebullience.
