Call him Joe Kane. Like other oilfield spies, Kane is wary of publicity and careful not to tip his cards in discussing how he acquires the information oil companies want about their competitors. In previous years, Kane ignored interview requests. Today, he's more generous. Or maybe it's the drilling slump-too much time on his hands and nothing better to do than play cat and mouse with trade secrets.
