In August,the Syncrude Canada consortium reached the end of a long and very winding road when it put the first barrels of synthetic crude from its massive 2.2-billion oilsands project north of Fort McMurray into the pipeline for delivery to Edmonton.The event,duly recorded in a special 18-page report in the Aug.7,1978 issue of Oilweek,marked the closing chapter in a development saga that stretched back to the mid-195us,when Royalite Oil(a predecessor of Gulf Canada)launched a research project at the government-owned Bitumount plant on the banks of the Athabasca River.Cities Service Co.bought a 90 per cent interest in that project in 1958.A year later,Atlantic Richfield bought one-third of Cities Service's interest,and soon Imperial Oil joined the group.
