ON 31 AUGUST 2010, the United States withdrew its combat forces from Iraq, ending a seven-year campaign they called Operation Iraqi Freedom. However, as the US embarks upon Operation New Dawn, the country is faced with an increasingly hostile insurgency along with a political impasse that is threatening to dismantle Iraq's young and still fragile democratic political framework.
