The Murmansk Marine Biological Institute of the Kola Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences Celebrates Its 75th Anniversary

Last year the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute of the Kola Science Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences celebrated its 75th anniversary. The first Russian biological station in the White Sea was founded on the Solovetsky Islands in 1881. In 1899, it was relocated to the city of Alexandrovsk (presently called Polyarny) in Catherine harbor in Kola Bay, where it operated under the name of the Murmansk Biological Station until 1933. In the beginning of the twentieth century, such eminent scientists and science managers as Professors K.M. Deryugin and G.A. Kluge and Academician E.M. Kreps worked there. The operation of the station was suspended in 1933 due to the formation of a naval base of the Northern Fleet in Polyarny. On March 10, 1935, a special decree of the People's Commissars of the USSR and a decree of the Presidium of the USSR set up the Murmansk Biological Station (MBS) of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the village of Dalniye Zelentsy on the Barents Sea coast. In 1958, it was restructured into the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute (MMBI). The resumption of the station's operation in Dalniye Zelentsy became the official formation date of the MMBI.
