Systematizing cessation smoking support in care for cancer patients

All healthcare professionals (surgeons, anesthetists, medical oncologists, organs medical specialists, radiologists, general practitioners, nurses, etc.) have a role to play to help cancer patients quit smoking. Quitting smoking always brings benefits to patients. Whatever the diagnosed cancer location, quitting smoking is important to improve prognosis (decreased all-cause and cause-specific mortality; reduce the risk of second primary cancers; reduce risks associated with surgery and treatments-related toxicity and improve the physical and mental quality of life of patients. Smokers are 80 % more likely to stop if they get help from a health professional. Detection of tobacco consumption, delivering suitable advice to quit and the proposal for smoking cessation must be included in the therapeutic management of every patient who smokes. This should be initiated early in the treatment, especially before surgery, and maintained throughout care process and follow-up.
