Relations between China and Japan cooled dramatically over the weekend after Beijing said it had suspended top-level ties in a territorial dispute that threatens to slow down talks on joint oil and gas development. The move comes amid a growing row over the detention of a Chinese fishing boat captain. He and his crew were arrested by Japanese sea patrols on Sep. 8 after colliding with two Japanese coast guard vessels that were chasing it out of waters near a group of islets in the East China Sea.
