US Criminal Probe Adds to BP's Legal Woes

The US Department of Justice is reviewing possible criminal or civil violations stemming from BP's actions leading up to the Apr. 20 blowout at its Macondo Prospect in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, which triggered an unrelenting oil spill. US Attorney General Eric Holder said the department's efforts will focus on BP's adherence to at least four federal laws, including the Oil Spill Pollution Act, Clean Water Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, Endangered Species Act and "other traditional legal statutes" (OD Jun.2,p6).
