Denmark's Maersk Oil is to pay $2.4 billion in cash for South Korean SK Energy's sizable subsalt assets off Brazil in a bid to turn the country into one of its key production planks. The company, which is wholly owned by Danish group AP Moller-Maersk, said the deal offers immediate production and significant growth potential as discoveries identified in the acreage are appraised, with additional strong upside potential from exploration prospects. There is no debt associated with the acquisition, which is subject to government approval.
