The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has launched an extensive examination of the possible health and water-quality consequences of hydraulic fracturing, a technique used to extract oil and natural gas from the vast majority of wells in the US. The probe comes despite warnings from industry leaders who have said that further scrutiny or regulation of the practice at the federal level would simply create more red tape and slow down the explosive development of unconventional shale gas resources seen in recent years.
