Improvements in oil-field service giant Schlumberger's onshore US and Canadian businesses were strong enough to offset the impact of the Obama administration's deep-water drilling moratorium in the US Gulf of Mexico and push overall earnings higher dur-ing the third quarter. Rival service firms Hal-liburton and Weatherford also reported last week that strong results in their North Ameri-can onshore businesses made up for the de-cline in offshore activity (OD Oct.19,p1).
