An eastern Ohio play, the Utica Shale morphs into dry gas and the formation dives deeper as it crosses underneath the Ohio River and into West Virginia. But the high pressures and big IPs make it attractive, if not challenging. Stone Energy in December announced a 30 MMcf/d (24-hour rate) well in Wetzel County, West Virginia, from a 3,600-foot lateral. Conversely, Magnum Hunter lost control of its Stalder 3UH Utica well just a few miles inside Ohio near the West Virginia line, which had been shut in, due to pressure. That well had a peak IP of 32 MMcf/d.
