Russia: State-run Russian oil producer Rosneft has started commercial production at its giant Vankor field in East Siberia. Output started at 130 kbd and is expected to increase to 220 kbd by the end of 2009. Rosneft plans to have output from the field exceed 500 kbd by 2015. The field was initially to be launched in ute to air and water pollution as refineries process heavier crude, thus exacerbating global warming. The pipeline is to carry 450 kbd of crude from Hardisty, Alberta to Superior, Wisconsin. The capacity of the 1,000-mile pipeline would then be expanded to 800 kbd. Construction is already underway, with the 774-mile Canadian section of the line due to be completed by the end of 2009, and the 326-mile US section by - mid-2010.
