The US and its allies continued to bomb oilfields and refineries belonging to the forces of Islamic State (IS) in Syria and Iraq. An estimated 50,000 bpd out of nearly 70,000 bpd of oil production controlled by the militant jihadist group was put out of action by air strikes along with dozens of small distillation units used by IS to convert the crude into gasoline and diesel. The fuel is supplied to the population in the areas controlled by IS, and exported to Turkey. IS has been using money from the sale of fuel to fund its military activities. The Turkish authorities reported that they had managed to intercept some of the products that were being smuggled into Turkey.
