April showers didn't bring May flowers to Alberta this year. Instead, most of us watched in horror as dry conditions brought the massive wildfire that ravaged its way through the drought-stricken Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, scorching over half a million hectares of forests, torching thousands of homes and businesses, and resulting in the almost surreal evacuation of more than 80,000 terrified people through the smoke and flames.
