So now that the numbers have been crunched, just how bad was 2009 in terms of Canadian natural gas-export revenues? National Energy Board figures show revenues from natural gas sales to the United States fell 53 per cent to the lowest level in a decade. Revenues in 2009 plunged to only $15.53 billion from $33.12 billion in 2008. The record year was 2005, when hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico shut in production and pumped up North American gas prices. That was the year gas exporters received $35.57 billion for their shipments south of the border and the average price hit a record $8.90 per gigajoule.
