It seemed like such a good idea when Calgary-based GASFRAC Energy Services Inc. introduced its proprietary liquid petroleum gas-based fracturing technology in 2008. The Vantage Frac waterless technology, developed by company founder Dwight Loree, was touted as a green approach to fracking because the use of propane, rather than a water- or oil-based fracturing fluid, would virtually eliminate the use of water. Water use was seen as a growing concern among governments, since unconventional oil and gas wells can require the use of five million to six million gallons of water, much of which can't be recycled.
