Noted author of Canadian history Pierre Berton once said of Canadians: "We would rather be safe than sorry; alas, we are sometimes sorry we are so safe." The comparison was to our American neighbours and their willingness to take risks, to question authority, to buck the status quo. As Globe and Ma/'/columnist John Ibbitson wrote more recently, "Americans [unlike Canadians] are perpetually in full-throated reaction to the status quo."
