CONNECT, THEN LEAD For more than 50 years, the Society of Petroleum Engineers has helped bring together oil and gas professionals from around the world

In 1957, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) president John Hammond wrote to society members, "[SPE's] facilities and forums are the tools of the petroleum engineer; its continuity of service is the foundation for his professional growth. His future, and that of this professional society, are synonymous. Both will play a significant role in the growing reliance of the oil industry on technology to help meet the constantly rising demand for oil and gas production." His statement is as relevant today as it was more than 55 years ago. From 34 sections across North America in the 1950s to 191 professional sections and 264 student chapters today, SPE has more than 110,000 members worldwide. What makes SPE unique is that it is a not-for-profit organization that exists mainly for the benefit of its members, who are both the owners of the organization and its major customers.
