As the top natural gas producer in Canada and the third biggest in North America, Encana Corporation sets examples. By making water conservation a priority for its Environmental Innovation Fund, the Calgary-based international energy supplier taps its Alberta roots to keep development respectable and stay ahead of opponents.The spirit of the fund dates back to the Leduc discovery that started the modern Canadian oil and gas industry, 40 kilometres southwest of downtown Edmonton. The breakthrough well partly resulted from a constructive streak in environment protection that Encana vice-president Tony DiMaio, whose titles include chief risk officer, talks about in the firm's annual corporate responsibility report.
