Not all of the largest extra-heavy oil fields in the world are located onshore. In Mexico-one of the largest exporters to the United States-state-owned Pemex operates a substantial project offshore at Ku-Maloob-Zaap, which, according to the EIA, has been the largest source of production growth for the country in recent years, offsetting production declines from Mexico's previously massive Cantarell field.
