Malaysia launches rubber replanting program

The government of Malaysia has invested 275 million ringgits ($91.4 million) in a program to produce 2 million metric tons (2.2 million tons) of latex annually by 2020, the Borneo Post reported. According to the newspaper, 40,000 hectares (98,842 acres) of old rubber trees will be replanted regularly, while 30,000 hectares (74,132 acres) of new plantings will occur annually. The goal is to have 1.2 million hectares (2.9 million acres) planted by 2020. According to Kuala Lumpur's calculations, rubber growthand downstream production could net 52.9 billion ringgit ($17.6 billion) if the plan succeeds.
