Windows CE faces up to an industrial challenge

Windows CE is a 32-bit Windows compatible operating system intended far use in embedded systems. Typical applications include IT, industrial and medical equipment. Windows CE is a pre-emptive multitasking processor-independent operating systemrequiring minimal system resources. The user interface is similar to that of Windows 95. Applications may be developed under Windows NT. Microsoft is aiming to position Windows CE as the dominant future operating system of this type. However, significantdevelopment is still required. One particular drawback is the lack of a version of Windows CE for the PC platform, limiting the use of such features as execution from ROM and power management.
