After a week of near perfect summer weather, half an inch of rain fell the night before the Llynclys Quarry fieldtrip and gentle drizzle was still soaking into the earth as members gathered in the quarry car park. We were met by Paul Doogan, the unit manager, who gave one of the best safety briefings this reporter can recall. The effects of the economic downturn, now rather forgotten by the media, are still evident in the quarrying industry and in common with almost every other operation in the country, aggregate production at Llynclys has been scaled back. The quarry is fortunate in that it produces agricultural lime and demand from the farming community remains strong. As we walked through the quarry buildings Paul described the milling process for his premium 150 micron product.
