Joe Vincent Meigs was born October 24, 1892, in Lowell, Massachusetts. His father was a general practitioner, and his paternal grandfather was a captain in the American Civil War and was awarded the medal for bravery by Abraham Lincoln. Joe Meigs received an AB degree from Princeton in 1915 and his MD from Harvard Medical School in 1919. He received postgraduate training in gynecology at Massachusetts General Hospital while also serving as a full-time assistant to William Phillips Graves (1870-1933), professor of gynecology at the Free Hospital for Women in Brookline, Massachusetts. In 1927, Meigs was appointed gynecologist to the Pondville State Cancer Hospital of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. He subsequently became director of gynecology at Vincent Memorial Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Palmer Memorial Hospital. From 1932 to 1942, he was an instructor of surgery at Harvard University. In 1942, he was promoted to clinical professor of gynecology at Harvard Medical School. Meigs served as President of the Society of Pelvic Surgeons, the Boston Surgical Society, and the Boston Obstetrical Society. He was also Vice-President of the American College of Surgeons.
