Published rates for complications after abortion may be inaccurate for a number of reasons. They usually do not include complications diagnosed at a site other than the original care site such as an emergency department (ED). Only limited data are available for ED visits for complications, especially for women living in rural locations who must travel to distant locations for abortion care. Such women likely seek postabortion care at an ED near their home. Moreover, differences in procedures used for termination of pregnancy, weeks of gestation, and protocols used to detect complications influence reported rates.
