摘要

David Rogers graduated in ceramics from Farnham College of Art and Design in 1997, where he specialised in raku. Now in his early thirties he is making a living from his ceramics and running his own studio complex in the heart of Bristol. 'It's really tough trying to start up and to make enough money as a potter to survive after you graduate, but if you are willing to stick at it and find ways to supplement your income at the start, it is possible,' he says. 'I still don't know where my next buck is coming from, but I feel like things are finally looking up'. Immediately after graduating Rogers moved back to Lymingtoii, his home in the New Forest, to an old water-mill, the inspiration for his sculptural raku work. He joined the Hampshire Contemporary Artists, who operated a successful co-operative gallery, working with, amongst others, Jenny Sutton (fine art) Susie Perring (printmaker) and Michael Turner (metalwork sculptor). Strong sales of his functional stoneware meant that, along with the help of the bank, he was able to set up as a potter full-time.
