The kisspeptins are a group of endogenous amide peptides that bind to a receptor expressed in the hypothalamus, pituitary, and placenta. Inactivating mutations of the kisspeptin receptor in humans result in pubertal failure, whereas activating mutations lead to precocious puberty. These data and data from several other studies conducted in several species suggest that these agents are potential novel agents for treating reproductive disorders. Although there is considerable evidence that acute administration of kisspeptin stimulates gonadotropin release, there is little information on the long-term effects of chronic administration on reproductive function. The investigators hypothesized that repetitive administration of kisspeptin would stimulate gonadotropin release in women with hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA).
